Introduction

The year 2004 is going to be a truly huge year for the first person shooter genre. Games such as Half Life 2, Doom 3 and Killzone on the PS2 will all be trying to blast there way to the top of the FPS ladder. All 3 of the games previously mentioned are awesome looking games, but the most anticipated FPS (and possibly overall game) of 2004 is without a doubt Halo 2. The original Halo was released on the launch of the Xbox and quickly became and iconic title in the Xbox range. Incredibly, the game has only recently been knocked off the top of the Xbox sales chart, which is testament to how good the game actually is. The sequel has been along time in coming, but its finally within our sights and any respecting Xbox owner should be getting very excited about this. Read on to find out what all the fuss is about.

Firstly, if you haven't seen the trailer for this game then for gods sake, stop reading, go and find a trailer and see for yourself what you can expect. Halo 2 is sure to justify its name by giving us twice the action, twice the graphical excellence and twice the draw-dropping gameplay that made the original such a gaming classic. The trailer demonstrated at this years E3 show shows Master Chief arriving in a war zone with a drop ship full of marines to accompany him. They are arriving to give support to a city under heavy attack from the Covenant forces. The crowds at E3 were stunned by the amazing graphics and attention to details shown. I could review this trailer, but no word on the planet could possibly describe it. You have to see this baby for yourself.

Halo 2 will boast a wealth of new features and additions that will deffinently add extra gaming spice to the mix. The basis of the game is still the same, with a general Marines Vs Covenant theme, but now there are several brand new characters, vehicles and weapons that you can fight or use in the game. One of the most notable new characters added to the game are the ODST marines that accompany Master Chief and the standard Marines on the drop ship. The ODST marines are similar to Master Chief in almost every way. They are tough as hell compared to the standard marines and wear the same armour protection that Chief wears, only black instead of green to add extra coolness. There will also be an extra 2 new species of Covenant forces ontop of all the old ones from the previous game.

In terms of vehicles, Halo 2 has been given a large tweak in many places. As with the characters, all the old vehicles are still here but there several fantastic new additions. Warthogs !return in glorious fashion with a brand new weapon built for mass destruction against opposing vehicles. Rumours have it that Warthogs across the game could be equipped with different weapons, so you wont be restricted to just one, but this is a rumour and Bungie aren't letting much info out about this fact. But its not just the Marines who are treated to brand new or tweaked vehicles. The covenant have 2 new vehicles available to them. The first is the Phantom, a brand new dropship more deadly and dangerous than any of the dropships from the original game. While still dropping hordes of troops into the battle zone the Phantom will rain down weapons fire on you until it leaves, so you'll have to be extra careful when one arrives. The second new ship is a type of hoverbike designed for speed and manoeuvrability. Its only able to fly a certain distance from the ground, but its a fast ship with 2 large guns on the front which could be a very deadly form of attack for the! covenant.

The E3 trailer also shows a couple of very snazzy new weapons. Master Chiefs new standard weapon is an assault rifle with a slightly slower rate of fire than the standard rifle in Halo. The rifle does make up for the slower rate of fire by including sniper capabilities. Best of all though, Master Chief is now able to carry and use 2 weapons at a time. The demo shows Master Chief acquiring 2 submachine-guns and using them simultaneously for maximum firepower. Grenades have also been revamped this time around, and they will have alot more power behind them. Anyone caught within the wide blast radius will be affected in some way, weather it be death or just stunned and disorientated from the blast. Master Chief will also now be able to use the environment more to his advantage. Bullets will rebound off metallic objects realistically and any vehicle in the game is destroyable, which could become a nice new tactic to dispose of large groups of Covenant forces trying to take cover! behind or steal dormant vehicles.

Score

Halo is one of the best selling games on Xbox, but you can be assured that Halo 2 will probably outsell it not long after its release. Already a contender for game of 2004, its going to take something abit special to best Halo 2. The game still has a few
