The stands are filled with eagerly waiting fans to see the matches of the day. Two lone people stand on the colosseum floor, awaiting the signal to go. The referee steps up to check and see if both participants are ready. He gives the sign and the lights turn on, illuminating the battlefield. Both participants hold a small ball in their hands. Suddenly, both through them onto the ground and the battle has begun.
Pokemon Colosseum is the next installment in the popular franchise developed by Nintendo. It is the first title to make it to the Gamecube since its initial release. This title carries on the tradition of previous Stadium games with the classical battling arena where players can transport their team from their Ruby or Sapphire game and bring it onto the Gamecube and the big screen for more color and detail.
Also, this title offers something that previous Stadium game have to offer and that is an in-depth RPG portion that people can participate in. An evil organization is taking control of Pokemon by capturing and brainwashing them into Shadow Pokemon. The gamer is a trainer that snags these Pokemon from the evil trainers and brings them back to their sense using discipline and good care. This is a first in the series because it was always frowned upon to swipe Pokemon from any trainers whatsoever.
Anticipation
This title is the first in the franchise for a lot of things. This is the first title that uses the Pokemon from Ruby and Sapphire outside of the original game. The newest addition to the list of Pokemon will be able to be seen on the big screen in more definite terms for the first time.
The Snag ability that the trainer has is the first in the series. This is where the trainer swipes Pokemon from bad trainers in order to bring them back to their proper senses. This will offer gamers with some gameplay of about 30 hours where some of the Pokemon from Gold and Silver will be able to be collected. The Gameboy versions of Gold and Silver are not compatible with Colosseum whatsoever.
The idea of raising Pokemon up in their style of behavior is a first for the series as well. Getting a brainwashed Pokemon with the Snag ability is the first step in gaining a new ally for your team and one step closer to stopping the organization that is doing this to Pokemon out there. The standard way of raising used to be train and build levels by battling wild Pokemon or other trainers. Helping them to come back to the right side is a new factor that will be interesting to see how it will work in the long run.
What will be interesting to see is the actual battles that are fought in the arena. A 3D graphic engine is used to deliver Pokemon in the richest way possible. Also, moves that are executed will be fully rendered as well to add to effect and feeling of the battle as a whole. Trainers will be able to bring Pokemon from their Gameboy Advance titles or from the single player mode to battle it out against other opponents to become the ultimate Pokemon master yet again.
The classic Double Battle system will be implemented in this title as it appeared in Ruby and Sapphire. A trainer can send out two Pokemon at the same time for double the trouble and twice the damage.
The main character is not the ordinary child trainer that goes out to make a name for themselves. It is an older person who fits more into the grimmer reality that the world is being overrun by this evil organization and it has to be taken back. This broadens the range of age that players are advertised but still retains its degree of familiarity for those who are veterans to the series.
Also, a special preorder bonus is being offered. When preordered, one can get a pre-sell disc that contains the secret Pokemon, Jirachi, that can be ported into your game. Truly a must have for any Pokemaniac.
All in all, this title plans to offer something for everyone that is in the Pokemon series. If you want to battle against friends, this is the title for you. If you wanted a fully 3D adventure on the Gamecube as a title, you won’t be disappointed. Or if you want to get this title to add to your currently collection, go right ahead. Pokemon Colosseum is a title for Nintendo that will regenerate some interest into the franchise and hopefully keep it going for a longer time.
